New campaign on youth unemployment PDF Print E-mail

In the April issue of Heathrose News we drew attention to the unacceptably high levels of youth unemployment both globally and here in New Zealand. We note a new campaign, Reject Youth Employment, was launched on 3 November.

The coalition-led campaign aims at bringing a community and youth voice to the issue of high youth unemployment and the lack of opportunities available for young people in New Zealand. It is made up of Wellington People’s Centre The Salvation Army, Stand Up (youth wing of the NZ Council of Trade Unions), NZ Union of Students’ Associations of Aotearoa, Tertiary Education Union and the Beneficiary Advocacy Federation of New Zealand.

Official figures released on 3 November 2011 show youth unemployment for 15-19 year olds has fallen slightly but remains very high at 23.4 percent, while there has been an increase to 12.2 percent in unemployment for those aged 20-24 years.
