Work is generally good for health and wellbeing according to the Australasian Faculty of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (AFOEM).

In a position statement, Realising the health benefits of work released in April 2011, the AFOEM says the message that work is generally good for health is not yet widely accepted in New Zealand and Australia. In particular, the Statement views long-term work absence, work disability and unemployment as having a negative impact on health and wellbeing.

Both the New Zealand and the Australian Governments have signed up to the Consensus Statement developed by the AFOEM. The purpose of the Statement is to bring together government, business, unions, health professions and other stakeholders to work on the best ways to promote and realise the health benefits of work.
