Contrary to what many of us might feel on a Monday morning, work is good for you! BUT, it needs to be “good work”. The UK-based Work Foundation, has probed the “good work” concept for over a decade now. As part of this agenda, it invited leaders from all sectors of society to become “Good Work Commissioners” and investigate what makes work meaningful and satisfying. The premise of the Good Work Commission is that “a strong society is reliant on a strong economy and a strong economy is reliant on the availability of good work for its citizens.” The final report, Good Work and Our Times: Report of the Good Work Commission provides a fascinating insight and innovative approach to analysing and then changing the culture of work. The report includes a framework for discussion as a tool for managers and leaders to assess whether – and how effectively – their organisation is providing “good work”, and what can be done to create more of it. |
